Although the inscription written by the artist tells that this painting imitates a work by Yunxi Laoren (or Cao Zhibai, 1272-1355), it is not a direct imitation because the brushwork is in Yun Nantian's (1633-1690) original style. The light coloration and light brushwork effects of this work resemble flower-and-bird paintings made in meigu fa (J., mokkotsu shasei gahô), or "boneless sketching technique," in which Nantian excelled.
