Kanô Einô (1631-1697), whose pseudonym was Sansei, was the third-generation master of the Kyoto Kanô school, which was previously headed by Sanraku (1559-1635) and Sansetsu (1590-1651). The seasonal scenes of the twelve months of the year are depicted simply, yet elegantly on square paperboards (J., shikishi). It is regretful, though, that the work is missing one month. It is nevertheless a good example for understanding the breadth of Einô's artistic talents.
