This poem anthology, Poetry Match among Members of Various Professions (J., Shokunin Utaawase), is fashioned as a poetry competition (J., utaawase) between artisans of various professions. Many variants of this collection exist. The oldest depicts five matches (among ten poets of various professions), held at the Tôhoku-in Temple, in Kyoto, in 1214 (Kenpô 2). From the combination of the members from different professions, this piece can be classified as an example of the twelve-match variant (composed of twenty-four poets).
The expression of the shaman and the carefree lines of his robes delicately copied in the traditional style in this segment suggest that this piece dates to the late Kamakura period (1185-1333), making it invaluable as the oldest extant version of the Poetry Match among Members of the Various Professions.
