As indicated by the inscription at the beginning of the scroll that reads "five directional buddhas, bodhisattvas, and so forth," this iconographic scroll is based upon comparative research of the correspondence between the Five Guardian Bodhisattvas and Five Great Myoo in both old and new versions of the Ninnokyo sutra. A colophon dated to 1178 by the To-ji priest Nimpo can be found at the end of the scroll. Research on iconography related to the Ninnokyo was quite popular during the twelfth century.
