Ten Scenes of Japan

Museum No.
AK767

Kanô Tan'yu (1602-74), whose given name was Morinobu, established the Kanô school, which influenced painting circles during the Edo period (1615-1868). Originally a handscroll, this long, narrow folding screen illustrates celebrated places in Japan that are described in classical Japanese verse, in the soft brushstrokes of yamatoe ("Japanese paintings") style.
