Princess Bunkô (1595-1644), whose nickname was Higashi no Gosho, was the daughter of Emperor Goyôzei (1571-1617, r. 1586-1611). Her mother was the daughter of Nishinotôin Tokiyoshi (1552-1639). The character "hi" is her signed initial, taken from her nickname. The recipient, "Daimon," is her nephew, Cloistered Prince Sonshô, who was the abbot of Daikaku-ji Temple in Kyoto. Higashi no Gosho tells him in the letter about Emperor Goyôzei's birthday and an unlucky day prior to the prayer service to be held at the temple.
