Dôchô (1544-1608) was the son of chancellor (J., kanpaku) Konoe Taneie (1503-66) and the younger brother of Konoe Sakihisa (1536-1612). He was the abbot of Shôgo-in Temple and also served as the head monk at the Three Shrines of Kumano (J., Kumano Sanzan) in Wakayama Prefecture and at Onjô-ji Temple in Shiga Prefecture. In this letter sent to a sub-temple of Daitsû-ji Temple, Henshôin-in, Dôchô talks about the date and time of the senbô ("sin-annulling") ceremony and his availability. The signature "Josetsu" employs Dôchô's Buddhist name.
