The design of this kimono features four of the Six Tama Rivers, referring to six rivers that flow through six provinces. Each is associated with a utamakura (“poem pillow”): On the shoulder parts we find Noji Tamagawa (moon), Noda Tamagawa (plovers), Ide Tamagawa (Japanese marigold bush), and on the sleeves Mishima Tamagawa (deutzia).
