Porcelain with designs in white glaze on blue or brown background is generally called hanamochi te because the designs resemble mochihana, or a branch decorated with small pieces of rice cake, prepared for the New Year. This work is a typical example of hanamochi te ("hanamochi plate") on azure ground. Similar plates have been excavated from the residential remains of the Shinshû Takatô clan in Edo (present-day Tokyo).
