This incense burner is thought to have copied the shape of li ("caldron"), a type of bronze ware from ancient China. Since the outline of the body suggests a person wearing hakama, or wide culotte-like trousers, the work is called Hakama goshi kôro ("hakama-shaped incense burner") in Japanese. Similar works have been excavated from the sunken ship off the Shinan Coast of Korea.
