This segment from the Poetry Competition among Poets of Different Eras (J., Jidai fudô utaawase) is the oldest of its kind. The poem anthology consists of fifty rounds of poetry competitions (J., utaawase) among one hundred poets from different eras and is thought to have been compiled by Emperor Gotoba (r. 1183-1198). The meticulous brushwork depicting the delicate expressions of the poets and the calligraphic style of the poems suggest that this work dates to the early Kamakura period (1185-1333).
