Shinshun was the name that Hasegawa Tôhaku (1539-1610) used when he was young. He first studied under Sesshû's (1420-1506) disciple, Tôshun, in Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, but eventually came to Kyoto. He had broad learning in Kanô school paintings, yamato e ("Japanese paintings"), and paintings of the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1277-1368) dynasties of China.
