Overview

Sasanquas

Museum No.
AK375

With flat golden clouds executed in spaces amongst trees and branches, and with flowers and trees depicted directly on the base material rather than on the gold-foil ground, this work conveys the atmosphere of paintings from the Muromachi period (1392-1573). During this period, folding screens with flowers and trees were often depicted as gachû ga ("pictures depicted in paintings") in emaki ("illustrated narrative handscrolls"), but few such works remain. The name of the plant in this work is still debated; however, we have followed tradition by calling it sasanqua.
