This hanging scroll was brushed by Gukyoku Reisai (d. 1452), a Zen monk from Yamashiro Province (today, southern Kyoto Prefecture). He was a disciple of the master Daichû Reishô (active late fourteenth century) and later served as the abbot of the great Rinzai Zen monasteries of Tôfuku-ji and Nanzen-ji in Kyoto. His calligraphy was well known and said to have been a protection against fire; hence, many sought his works.
