Many volumes of this edition of the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Skt., Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra, J., Daihannyaharamittakyô), from Yakushi-ji Temple, are extant today. Including the volumes in our collection, Yakushi-ji owns thirty-seven volumes and Fujita Museum of Art (in Okayama Prefecture) has 387 volumes.
Known also as Yakushiji kyô (Yakushi-ji Sutra), this scripture is stamped with round, crimson seals, Yakushiji in (Seal of Yakushi-ji), at the beginning, and with a black seal, Yakushiji Kondô (Main Worship Hall of Yakushi-ji), on the obverse. According to tradition, Asano Nakai (n.d.), the calligraphy teacher of Kûkai (774-835), the founder of the esoteric Shingon sect, copied this sutra. Hence, its other appellation, Nakaigyô (Nakai Sutra).
