This work, popularly known as “Slumbering Hotei,” is executed in pale ink imbuing the figure with a tenuous aura. It is designated among the most remarkable works of apparition painting (mōryōga), a designation that refers to this ghostly quality. A gourd-shaped seal reading “Zen’a” is found at the lower right corner.
