As seen in the novels of Ihara Saikaku (1642-93), it was customary for new brides to bring along The Tale of Genji (J., Genji monogatari) as part of their bridal furnishings. That is why byôbu ("folding screens"), emaki ("illustrated narrative handscrolls") and gajô ("albums") depicting The Tale of Genji were made in large quantities in the past. Attributed to Sumiyoshi Gukei (1631-1705), this work was probably produced for such a reason as well. Gukei left the Tosa school he had been affiliated with to start the Sumiyoshi school.
