Shôjô (1584-1639), known as one of the “Three Brushes of the Kan’ei Era (1624-44),” was a priest, who lived in the Takimoto quarters of Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine. Having studied painting with Kanô Sanraku (1559-1635), he created skilful works. His refined style in both painting and calligraphy were immensely popular. The verse in this painting was composed and brushed by the Rinzai Zen master Takuan (1573-1645).
