Although a painter, Ike no Taiga (1723-76) is also renowned as a calligrapher. While he was earning a-living by selling fan paintings, for which he collected design materials from imported woodprint books, Taiga was discovered by Yanagisawa Kien (1704-58) and began to play an active role in painting circles. He produced a number of works, from those of small-scale to large-scale masterpieces. Although this work is a small one, it demonstrates clearly Taiga's unstrained brushstrokes.
