Nakanishi Kôseki (1807-1884) was born into a family of Bizen potters and later moved to Osaka, then to Kyoto to become a literati painter. Among his teachers was the nanga painter Oda Kaisen (1785-1862). Kôseki was known for his landscape paintings and became a leading figure in the circle of literati painters in Osaka and Kyoto in the late Edo (1616-1867) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods and was highly regarded along with Hine Taizan (1813-1869).
