Chôkunyû (1814-1907), born in Taketa in the province of Bungo (present-day Ôita Prefecture), became a disciple of Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835), who was at the time a leader in the world of literati paintings. Chôkunyû later adopted the family name, Tanomura. He came to Kyoto at the start of the Meiji period (1868-1912), and made every effort to establish Kyoto Gagakkô ("Kyoto Painting School"). Being long-lived, he produced a great number of works. Those made in his later years tend to be rather rough, yet this work is considered a masterpiece.
