This album of The Tale of Genji (J., Genji monogatari) dates back to the late Muromachi period (1392-1573). Although unconfirmed, the work is attributed to Tosa Mitsumoto (?-1569). In any case, it is reasonable to presume that it was completed by a Tosa school artist in the mid-16th century. The work conveys a pleasant, tranquil atmosphere to the viewer, which is unusual for colorful Momoyama-period paintings. Mitsumoto joined the army of lord Oda Nobunaga (1534-82), and died in battle at Tajima in present-day Hyôgo Prefecture.
