Mount Horai (Ch., Penglai) is a sacred mountain from ancient Chinese legend, located in the Eastern Sea. Wizards were thought to live there, and it was considered to be the land of perennial youth and immortality. For Japan, which itself is an island in the Eastern Sea, Mount Horai was an auspicious subject for kisshô ga ("lucky paintings"), in which cranes and tortoises were arranged together in the painting. Although Nakabayashi Chikkei (1816-67), the oldest son of Chikudô (1778-1853), was a southern-style painter, he was brilliant at sketching and has a pleasant and delicate painting style. Seigyô was his pseudonym.
