Genki (1749-97) studied under Maruyama Ôkyô (1733-95) and was considered with Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-99) as the best of Ôkyô’s pupils. Genki was famous for his paintings of Chinese beauties as well as of flowers and birds. Here, Arashiyama, covered in cherry blossoms, and Toganoo, ablaze in autumn foliage, are rendered in an early modern style popularly used to depict famous places.
