Yokoyama Seiki (1792-1864) was a disciple of Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843) and became a leading figure within the Shijô school of painting. The three heroes of ancient China depicted in this work are Guan Yu (?-219), Emperor Liu Bei (161-223, r., 221-223), and Zhang Fei (?-221).
