Lan Sheng (17th century) was born in Qiantang in the province of Zhejiang, China. He was the grandson of Lan Ying (1585-ca. 1664) and the son of Lan Yu (n.d.), a family renowned for painting. Although Lan Sheng basically followed the family style established by Lan Ying, its typically aggressive brushstrokes are no longer seen in this work. Rather, the brushstrokes are quite delicate. The design is after a work by Zhang Zenyou of the Liang dynasty (502-557).
