Yun Xiang (1586-1655), whose given name was Daosheng and later Xiang, was born in Wujin in the province of Jiangsu, China. His sobriquet was Benchu and his artist name was Xiangshan. Yun Xiang made this painting on the day following the summer solstice, when he took a boat ride to escape the hot weather. The work skillfully displays the tastes of literati painters of the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644), who were especially partial to landscape paintings. The simple brushwork style in this work resembles that of Huang Gongwang (1269-1354) and Ni Zan (1301-1374), who lived during the late Yuan dynasty (1277-1368). Since the seal "Dongsheng" is used with the seal "Xiang," this painting was probably made during his prime.
