The design of a plum tree in this work is known as gongshao. A composition containing a few plum tree branches is typical of plum blossom paintings from the first half of the Yuan dynasty (1277-1368). The inscription is one which Chan (J., Zen) monks often included in plum blossom paintings and describes one of the various appearances of plum trees.
