Wang Hui (1632-1717; pseudonym Shigu), among the most preeminent and prolific of the Four Wangs, was from Jiangsu, Changshou. Under the aegis of Wang Jian and Wang Shimin, Wang Hui studied and copied many ancient and modern masterpieces, and was able to integrate various traditional styles while focusing on the conservative technique of the Southern Song schools. Although painted in his old age, the brushwork is filled with vitality, successfully capturing the air of early summer.
