Green-glazed Sutra Container

Museum No.
JK390

This is a cylindrical container into which a sutra case had been set, with a tray shaped lid, and which had been buried in a sutra mound (Kyozuka). A pair of raised belts are surrounding the upper, middle, and lower parts of the body. The lower part of the body is slightly narrower than the other parts, and the bottom is flat. The lid is shaped like a tray with a stand, while the glazing covers all of the body except for the inside of the bottom. It also covers both the inside and outside of the lid. It was made in the 10th century, and it is a rare example of green-glazed ware. Only one similar example exists, which was made in the Sanage kiln.
