Various types of ritual implements were developed during the Yayoi period (ca. 400 B.C.-ca. A.D. 250) for prayers for peace and good harvest for villages. One such implement was the dôtaku ("bronze bell"). Originally a musical instrument for rituals, dôtaku began to be made larger for use as ceremonial ornaments. Careful examination of the knobs for passing strings through and the decoration patterns can tell us when and for what reasons these dôtaku were made.
