An old withered tree with a large hook-shaped branch juxtaposed with bamboo exemplify a strong sense of endurance and vitality, as well as a contrast between yin and yang. The artist, Guo Bi, also known as Tianxi and Tuisi, was born in Jiangsu, Jingkou. After passing the civil servants' exam, he became an education official in 1314. Shortly before his death (c. 1340), Guo Bi became a professor of Wujiang Confucianism, and was known to have enjoyed the company of Chan (Zen) scholars and priests.
Although he was a low ranking official, Guo Bi, whose brush work was influenced by the literati Moxi, was also one of the great artists of his time. This outstanding piece in the tradition of bamboo paintings of the Northern Song literati style was dedicated to the Chan master Wuwen.
