This work bears the twelve chapters of the Tang Feng section from China's earliest collection of poems, Shijing (E., The Book of Songs). Each chapter is accompanied by a painting. It is thought that the emperors of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279), Gaozong (1107-87, r., 1127-62) and Xiaozong (r., 1163-89) themselves wrote out the poems of Shijing and had Ma Hezhi make paintings. A dozen illustrated handscrolls of Shijing that have been attributed to them are found across the world. This work is one such handscroll, but its brushwork is simpler compared to a similar one that is housed at the Liaoning Museum in China. It is probably a reproduction of the original work and seems to have been made in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
