Goshun (1752-1811) was the eldest son of a Gold Monopoly Councilor (J., kinza toshiyori yaku), Matsumura Kazaemon Tadahodo. During his youth, he produced many poems and literati paintings. After he became a disciple of Yosa Buson (1716-83), his artistic talent was widely recognized. His first pseudonym as a poet was Gekkei, and he used several other names such as Zaihaku and Sonseki before finally setting on to Goshun in 1782 (Tenmei 2). After he became acquainted with Maruyama Ôkyo (1733-95), his painting style gradually became more realistic. After Ôkyo's death, he became a central figure among realistic painters and later established the Shijô school.
