Chen Tong, whose sobriquet was Shisheng, used the pseudonym, Yunting. He was born in Lou (Songjian) in the province of Jiangsu, China. Chen Tong was accomplished in flower-and-bird paintings and became famous after moving to Beijing. This work is finely painted with thin, sharp outlines and solid use of colors, following the antique and elegant style of the Imperial Academy of Painting during the Song dynasty (960-1279). It is a valuable work that shows the diversity of flower-and-bird paintings in the mid-Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
