Saga dolls, named after a region in western Kyoto, are made of wood painted with colored pigments. The colors on this doll have faded from their original brilliance. Early Saga dolls were typified by inscrutable facial expressions and nodding heads. This doll’s head nods back and forth. When that happens, its tongue moves in and out.
