The Chinese characters embroidered in Couching stitch with gold thread onto the upper part of this kimono are taken from part of a Chinese poem written by Sugawara Fumitoki entitled "Chrysanthemums," which was included in Wakanrôeishu (Anthology of Japanese and Chinese Poems for Recitation): "After a storm passes through a garden of purple orchids in full bloom / Only chrysanthemums remain in bloom in the moonlight in the frost-laden palace garden." Those who were familiar with this poem were sure to have seen chrysanthemums blooming quietly in the moonlight on this kimono.
