The Doll Festival traces its origins to the Double Third (Jōshi) Festival on the third day of the third lunar month. On that day, it was thought that people could transfer their defilements onto dolls of paper or other simple materials and float them away. Tachibina developed out of such prototypes. They are older than seated dolls.
