Tachibina developed from earlier katashiro (ritual paper doll substitutes or decoys) thought to draw impurities away from actual people. These standing dolls, which can’t stand up on their own, remained popular throughout the Edo period (1615–1868). They often were made with the heads of hina types popular at the time.
