A hōko (“crawling child”) doll has both arms and legs to represent a baby crawling along on all fours. Many are made of silk stuffed with cotton; this is wood painted with gofun (crushed shell white). In the Edo period (1615–1868), amagatsu dolls seem to have represented boys and hōko girls, so they were often displayed in pairs.
