One of the seven gods of good luck, Fukurokuju is the God of Wealth. The artist, Torii Eitaro (n.d.), is known for producing pictorial weavings on a Jacquard loom, and this woven hanging scroll in satin (J., shush) was probably woven on such a loom. Unlike the draw loom (sorabikibata), which relied on a person to lift up the pattern heddles, the Jacquard loom used punch cards to produce the pattern, and this made possible the production of large quantities of patterned weaves.
