This wall hanging is a duplicate of one displayed at the Expo in Chicago in 1892 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus discovering America. The piece that was actually displayed is presently in the Tokyo National Museum.
This large piece of about four meters in height and two meters in width has been skillfully woven with scenes of summer in Kyoto, including the tall floats of the Gion Festival from a cartoon sketch by Hara Zaisen (1849-1916). Although the weaver, Sasaki Kiyoshichi (n.d.), was famed for taking up weaving on a Jacquard loom when they were first introduced to the Nishijin weaving district, this work was made on a draw loom (J., sorabikibata), employing six or seven people to operate the pattern heddles.
