The brown base color of this bottle was realized by coating the entire body with iron brown glaze. Other gourd-shaped sake bottles of Kokiyomizu ("old Kiyomizu") ware have survived to the present, such as a collection at Seiryû-ji Temple in Kyoto. Gourds were probably a popular motif for sake bottle shapes.
