This letter written by Emperor Hanazono (1297-1348, r.1308-18), at the age of thirty-seven, was sent to Prince Son'en (1298-1356) in the tumultuous period following the Genkô Uprising in 1333 (Genkô 3). Phrases such as "the affair of the temple Kongô," "rebellious factions and simultaneous rebellions in the western provinces," refer to the military activities of the bakufu government against the armed forces of Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336) based at Chihaya Castle (in Osaka Prefecture) and the movements of forces raised by Akamatsu Norimura (1277-1350) Kokenawa Castle in Harima (present-day Okayama Prefecture).
