The use of patterns depicted in iron beneath a celadon glaze is called "celadon with underglaze iron." This type of celadon was influenced by Chinese ceramics and seems to have begun to be produced in Korea around the 11th to 12th centuries. The underglaze iron decoration on this jar is simplified and is a relatively recent example of celadon with underglaze iron.
