The composition of this plate, divided into five segments of twisting blossoms, belongs to the style of Xiangrui (J., Shonzui); while along the rim where the glaze has skipped, producing the decorative effect of "insect-eaten" spots (J., mushikui), belongs to the style of early underglaze blue ware (J., kosometsuke). Both of these are ceramic ware dating to the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The common characteristics of both these styles on this plate give it a striking complexity and richness.
