Tenmoku tea bowls produced at the Jian kilns in Fujian Province fall into two types, those with a strongly everted lip and those on which the rim is not markedly everted (the so-called "tenmoku form"). This bowl falls into the latter category. Among the tenmoku tea bowls fired at the Jian kilns, there are many examples in which countless fine lines of brown and silver appear on the black glaze. In Japan, this is called Nogime Tenmoku because the surface pattern is thought to resemble the "beard" on ears of rice.
