From the presence of Arabic letters on this object, it might be thought to have been made for export to the Islamic world, but, in fact, actual extant examples in Islamic areas are surprisingly few. Another view regards this phenomenon as an expression of a taste for the exotic. The brush holder bears the inscription, "Made in the Shôtoku era [1506-21]" in underglaze blue.
China-Ming
