Tenmoku tea bowls made at the Jian kilns in Fujian Province, China, fall into two categories: those with a strongly everted rim and those in which the rim is not very everted (the so-called "tenmoku form"). This bowl is an example of the first type. There are a number of similar examples, both among objects handed down by collectors and those that have been excavated. Compared with bowls of the "tenmoku form," however, these are few in number, and this type of tenmoku tea bowl was only rarely imitated at Japanese kilns.
