This type of porcelain jar with four lugs is thought to have been produced at kilns in southern China. They were brought to Japan in considerable quantity in the 12th to 13th centuries and were used to hold cylindrical sutra containers and as ossuaries. This form of vessel was the prototype of early Japanese Seto jars with four lugs.
